Yoga Web Design Site Launched

Posted on May 6th, 2011 by Dave   |   No Comments

I’m happy to announce that Healing Arts Web Design is now live. This is a project that I started to focus my efforts on producing high quality, beautiful, and practical websites for people that are passionate about what they do.

Healing Arts Web Design has already launched three projects, and hopefully it will become a first choice for teachers and studios looking for yoga web design, yoga studio web design, or non-profit web design.

One of the things that I wanted to get across when designing the site was that modern day web design is all about making things easier and smarter. I decided to make certain things included in every site that Healing Arts Web creates, like a custom content management system, blog, and easy to manage schedule and calendar.

I’m excited to help other who are on a path of teaching, learning, and growing through the spiritual arts grow their business and help them reach more people through creating beautiful and effective websites.

If you need a custom yoga website or a custom website for a yoga studio, head to Healing Arts Web Design.

Guggenheim Museum Poster

Posted on December 18th, 2010 by Dave   |   No Comments

When I lived in New York City for a few years, one of the things I got into was selling my photography on the street outside of the different museums in Manhattan. The Met, the Museum of Natural History, and the Guggenheim were all spots where I tried to sell my landscapes and mandala artwork to tourists (with varying degrees of luck).

The Guggenheim in particular though, made a lasting impression on me – the beautiful lines and shapes of the building, the way the sunlight hit the white exterior, even the other vendors themselves. This poster was created by Chermayeff & Geismar and I think its brilliant.

I know that there is always more than one answer to the problems that a design project presents, but most of the time there is a solution that is best. This poster is one of those solutions.

New Print Work – Osul Promo

Posted on December 1st, 2010 by Dave   |   No Comments

I just finished working on the new promo flyer for Osul’s upcoming show. Gig posters are always a fun project to work because of the amount of creative freedom that usually comes with the project. For this flyer, I took images from the band’s rehearsal space – coffee and cacao bean sacks – to highlight the group’s international musical influences.

You can check out Osul at their website: osulmusic.com.

Jared Kimbell is a graphic designer in Long Beach, California and a core designer for DesignPrintShip. He studied at Platt College and is our go-to Illustrator expert.

This is one of my favorite illustrations that he’s done – a concept marketing piece for the Sydney Opera House done entirely in vector graphics. You can find more of his work at jaredkimbell.com.

New Business Cards

With the new website redesign, it was definitely time for a re-branding of my own logo and business cards. I think the new feel of the brand is unique and fun.

For the back, I thought a simple, vintage typographic layout would be really nice.

Handcrafted is Better

Posted on September 26th, 2010 by Dave   |   3 Comments

If you’ve ever gone shopping for a website or web designer online, you might have seen it – the “$100 Website Special” on Craigslist, or the promise of “Your Site Up and Running in 24 Hours.” Whenever I see one of these ads I always think – OK, so what am I really getting?

Chances are, I’m getting a re-used, recycled template that has my images thrown into it, with no consideration for what my actual needs are for my website. We create our websites by hand at DesignPrintShip, and handcrafted is better.

Here’s why:

Stand out from the crowd.

Uniqueness and standing out amongst competitors is becoming increasingly important as more and more businesses expand their online presence. Recycled templates don’t accomplish this. Designing a tailor-made website from scratch with your visual and functional goals in mind does.

Do standards mean anything anymore?

Handcrafting websites means that the designer probably cares enough about their work to comply to strict industry standards. This is known as validating a website. These standards increase the likelihood that websites will work as intended for a longer period of time, will work on different web browsers, and are easier to maintain. Most importantly, validation is a mark of professionalism that conveys quality work.

So is this an art?

Cranking out websites a dime a dozen is certainly one way to pay the rent, and there will always be designers out there looking to capitalize on the high-output, low-price game. Of course, this almost always means low-quality too. Handcrafted web design requires more patience, a passion for creating, and taking pride in quality work.
